Ductless mini splits

Can You Install a Mini Split Without Ductwork?

Yes. A mini split does not need a full duct network. It still needs the right indoor-unit locations, an outdoor unit, connection paths, drainage, controls and electrical service.

Ductless avoids a full duct network, but placement and connection paths still matter.

01

Ductless means the room gets air directly

Each indoor unit heats or cools the space it serves instead of sending air through a central duct network. Refrigerant lines, control wiring and a drain connect the indoor unit to outdoor equipment through a much smaller path.

02

One unit does not automatically serve every room

Walls, closed doors, floor levels and room use affect how far conditioned air reaches. Decide which spaces need their own zone and which can share one before choosing the number and location of indoor units.

03

Indoor placement affects comfort and service

The unit needs a clear air path, a workable drain route and access for cleaning and repair. The best-looking location is not useful if air cannot reach the occupied part of the room or the unit cannot be serviced.

04

The outdoor unit still needs a home

Plan the outdoor location, supports, service clearance, sound, weather exposure and the distance back to the indoor units. In a condo or row house, building access and exterior rules can narrow the choices.

05

Power and drainage belong in the quote

A ductless quote should say who handles electrical work, where the connections run, how condensate drains, how wall openings are sealed and what equipment is removed. No full duct system does not mean no building work.

06

Compare ductless with the air path you already have

Ductless can be useful for additions, rooms without ducts and properties where a full duct network is not practical. If good ducts already serve the whole property, a central option may still be simpler. Compare both against the spaces that need heating and cooling.

Common questions

What customers ask.

Can one mini split cool an entire house?

Sometimes one indoor unit can serve an open area, but walls, doors and floor levels limit how air moves. Whole-property designs often need more than one zone or a different system.

Does a mini split need a drain?

The indoor unit removes moisture while cooling, so the installation needs a condensate path or another approved drainage method.
